Overview

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to use specialised equipment in the provision of resuscitation in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines.
The Advanced Resuscitation course enables students to obtain advanced skills in automated external defibrillation, mechanical resuscitation and oxygen delivery and understand the fundamental principles that can be applied to save and preserve life in accordance with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines.

4 hours of face to face training

Pre-requisites

There are no pre-requisites.

Outcomes

On successful completion, participants will receive a nationally recognised statement of attainment in HLTAID007 Provide advanced resuscitation course, valid for twelve months.

Entry Requirements

Students must have the physical ability to provide resuscitation by kneeling on the floor and performing two (2) minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an adult and infant manikin.

It’s important to note that there is a physical requirement to complete 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor with a manikin.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning is available to those who can provide other evidence that they can demonstrate the skills, knowledge, and experience described by the unit. There is a currency requirement to be able to demonstrate skills such as CPR.

Unique Student Identifier (USI)

Every student requires a Unique Student Identifier (USI) to obtain a certificate or qualification from their registered training organisation when studying a nationally recognised training course in Australia.

A USI gives you access to an online account which keeps all your training records together, even if you move locations, change training organisations or undertake studies at different times in your life. For more information ask your training organisation or visit www.usi.gov.au.

You will be assessed on:
State/Territory regulations, first aid codes of practice and workplace procedures:
ARC Guidelines relevant to the provision of CPR
Safe work practices to minimise risks and potential hazards
Infection control principles and procedures, including use of standard precautions
First aid requirements for services under the Education and Care Services National Law
Guidelines from Australian national peak clinical bodies
Requirements for currency of skill and knowledge

Legal, workplace and community considerations:

Awareness of potential need for stress-management techniques and available support following and emergency situation, including the psychological impact on children
Duty of care requirements
Respectful behavior towards a casualty
Own skills and limitations
Consent, including situations in which parental/caregiver consent is required
Privacy and confidentiality requirements
Legal requirements of administration of medication and the rights and responsibilities of the First Aider in the workplace regarding medication

Considerations when providing CPR:

Airway obstruction due to body position
Appropriate duration and cessation of CPR
Appropriate use of an AED
Assessment and interpretation of vital signs (respirations, temperature and pulse)

Chain of survival
Standard precautions
How to conduct a visual and verbal assessment of the casualty

Considerations when providing supplementary oxygen, including:

Benefits, contraindications and complications of providing oxygen to a casualty and of providing suction during the application of advanced resuscitation techniques
Complications with the use of a bad-valve-mask device and suitable strategies to minimise these
Selection and operation of oxygen masks and other appropriate delivery devices

Basic anatomy, physiology and toxicology as it relates to the provision of advanced resuscitations, including:

Basic electrical activity associated with normal and abnormal heart rhythm
How to recognise a person is not breathing normally
Relevant organs of the cardiopulmonary systems and their operations
Response/level of consciousness
Upper airway and effect of positional change

Methods for cleaning, replenishing, recharging and maintaining resuscitation and oxygen equipment including:

Actions to rectify problems
Procedures to ensure operational readiness
Storage, cleaning, decontamination and safe disposal of consumables
Troubleshooting to identify minor and major faults

ASSESSMENT – PRACTICAL – Physical demonstrations (skills)

The simulated assessment environments will reflect the real-life working environment where these skills and knowledge would be performed, with all the relevant equipment and resources of that working environment. Skills must be demonstrated by the student working individually in an environment that provides realistic in-depth, industry-validated scenarios and simulations to assess students’ skills and knowledge.

You will be assessed on performing first aid scenario and task demonstrations for:

Recognise an emergency and make the scene safe
Perform CPR on an infant
Perform CPR & defibrillation on an adult
Assess and monitor a casualty
Locate workplace policies and procedures
Administer oxygen for the unconscious
Administer oxygen for the conscious
Fill out an incident report
Verbally report an incident debrief
Check, maintain and clean equipment ready for future use
